MALCOM'S BLOG

THE RIVER CRUISER OPEN HOSTED BY EAST ANGLIAN CRUISING CLUB (Formed in 1936) ON THE WEEKEND OF THE 27th and 28th June 2015.

As usual things happen to me and some of the time the changes which occur are for the good and sometimes not. On the Saturday I mentioned doing a blog and was, in no uncertain terms I may add, told that if I am racing then I can't do a blog. So here instead is a report. If you like it great; if not Paul Stevens asked me to do it.

My usual crew job is on Cardiac 2 (sail no 152) but for some reason the skipper was not able to get to the event, something about time off, me not doing the 3 RR and playing with my “Wherry Friends” instead and …….. Well it doesn't matter what else.

With the threat of gardening looming an advertisement was placed on EACC Facebook begging for somewhere for moveable ballast to be put that might be of some use. Sure enough Buccaneer drew the short straw, apparently his crew was unable to get to the event and not being able to find someone else (well actually Steve (Sally) stitched his old man up) asked if I would mind crewing for him. The idea of adding another beautiful sailing boat to my “Tart List” could not be resisted, although I did wonder if Cut Throat John (not to be confused with HJ) would be able to put up with me for that long

In true EACC style preparation is everything, as is a clear head.  Snowbird is the race officer and he is nothing if not well  prepared. So much so he went to the club moorings on the Friday night to ensure all was in place. So confident was he that he refused to let me help set up on Saturday morning.

As can be seen nothing was left untested prior to the weekend.

I meet up with Cut Throat John and we have a ‘get to know the boat’ sail, why he needed to I know not as he owns her.

Towards midday on Saturday the boats started to gather for some sailing. The sun was shining and there was a fair wind around as well.

I also like to be fairly well prepared (honest) and I wanted to make sure that I had the correct timings in place. You know – register by; briefing at, and first boat start time. I know you shouldn't show favouritism to fellow members but for some reason the race officer was very cagey about the start time, and somehow to me seems not quite 100%, but perhaps that was just my imagination.

Eventually the Race Officer gives the briefing advising it is the pursuit race first, and the course will be BAB1B1B1, until the 100 mins has passed, all to port (or was that last night?). We are start number 4  with Mystery, with Martlet, then Pixie,  then Sally before us.

Why do skippers called John have an aversion to being close to the start line when the gun goes, because we were about a minute plus away. The first leg is round Thurne mouth up towards St Benet. The wind which CTJ thought might be a bit too much – which he fed to Sally who put a reef in – did not increase and likewise the gusts were not too bad. We had a bit of a tacking duel with Mystery but managed to get away and start to hunt down the boats in front. We caught Sally and as with most families there was no quarter given or expected. CTJ was able to get past Sally and we went looking for Pixie and Martlet, but we could not find them for quite a while, let alone catch them.

We are quite happy managing to keep in front of the faster boats, and we were nearly passed by Mischief, but a kind holiday maker in a motor cruiser got in the way. Still we were making no water on the front 2.

We had the BAB1, and time was starting to run out, when good ol’ Buccs found a bit more speed. Slowly but surely Pixie was getting nearer. Some more gently persuasion from CTJ and Buccs edged nearer and nearer. With about 3 mins to go we got clear of Pixie and were close to Martlet ever closer, a slight overlap and……………….. The hooter goes. A great 2nd place which CTJ was well pleased with.

The evening is to be at Hunters Yard with a BBQ. Buccs was given a pat on the bow and put to bed for the night. CTJ says he still hasn't found anyone else so will I come back tomorrow. Might as well said he says I says you.

A goodly crowd have gather to mardle and eat and drink and generally put what went wrong with the race right “ if only ……. And if he hadn't ………. I should have……….

Joining the festivities are Mr & Mrs WetRose who have just launched Mossy and got the sails on. People move from group to group. Me mainly to avoid the barbed comments, as I am soooo sensitive.CTJ’s regular crew turn up and join in.

It was a lovely evening and people seemed happy to relax, rehydrated and play quiz games. Q. Which city is further north? Norwich or Birmingham?

Q  Who is a “Southern Softy”?

Q Why don't you just go and ………….. (fill in the blanks)

So I did.

Day 2. Went down to the mouth via the club moorings where we handed over Jamie to Sally, as it appears she needed a bit more ballast for the day. The first race starts at 10:00 am and is known as the Roundabout. 3 marks, any order you like, but all to port. Talking of which it seems the line crew is a (wo)man down from yesterday. Rumour is collateral damage.

The wind has gone west of South, and CTJ decides to go early and down to the 1 mark. We advise the race officer of our intention. It is before 10:00 so we wander up and down. Then just as we get ready to go man go, Pippandjack get in the way, so we decide to let them lead us round, just in case we forget whether the marks are port or starboard. Leaving him enough room so that we get clean air we start and head down towards the 1 mark trying not to lose water on pnj. We follow the leader and not too long after the others go for it. The wind which was strong enough for CTJ to think about a reef dies a bit and the gusts  also went down some as well. We catch the flood tide all the way up to B mark which is good as it helps the tacking. Round B and head back down through the fleet which was interesting but without incident.RAIN, and more RAIN. Then up the Thurne to C using the flood tide again. Soon it was heading back to the finish. I said “ Home John and don't spare the horses” to which the reply was “ well if you pull the ****** jib in we’ll get there sooner.

It is very difficult to judge how we have done but we think we will not be last as we thought we had gained a bit on PNJ on the way round. We moored up for lunch. RAIN. The waitress service for coffee was a bit slow, but no complaints from me (she looked tough). It turns out that CTJ got it right and we were first.

The last race was a normal “round the cans”. Only 2 marks 1 and B 3 rounds all to starboard this time. Some decided that as it was not nice weather they would go home to dry out. Buccs is in start 4 with Sally Pixie and Martlet. Again the wind was favourable for us. A bit of a tacking duel going down the Oby straight was of interest but we managed to get clear, and look to the boats from the 3rd start. There was not too much to report on this race as we had no close incidents, and as we found out later some of the early starts rounded the mark in the wrong direction, so had to retire. As we went along we became aware  of a noise like a sailing boat getting some good wind and getting a bit close. A glance behind shows it is Sally and Steve has a big grin on his face. Well all I can say is father does what father's do and Sally slips behind. Round 1 and head for home. Can we get far enough away from Sally and Martlet to stay ahead………….

After the race we put Buccs to bed so far as possible and we and Sally crew have a drink and a slice of cake. As Wurzel Gummage sang “ A cup of tea and a slice of cake, suits Aunt Sally and that suits me.”

And so the epilogue. The prize giving. Nick, who by the way seems to have recovered from

how he felt on Saturday morning, gives the results in reverse order. Pursuit race Pixie Buccaneer and Martlet. Roundabout forgotten forgotten (really sorry about that) and Buccaneer. Final race Martlet Sally and by just 19 seconds on handicap Buccaneer. Which means that CTJ wins 16 cans of beer, sorry make that Carlsburg, oh and the  Moth Salver

A big thank you to the whole team who ran the line and safety boat etc. that is Nick the Race Officer, Amanda, John Aves time keeper/ computer whizz and R2 on safety boat.
