RIGGING OUT SUPPER 2023

This year we decided to return to the lovely Ranworth Village Hall for the 2023 ROS, the much anticipated curtain raiser of the new season. At least a few boats were launched in time to mean that some were able to arrive by water, which is always nice to see.

For the various willing galley slaves co-opted into food service, last year was a joy as the kitchen facilities, although compact (hey, we cook on boats!) were excellent, so we were looking for more of the same. Regrettably, however, there had been some changes and the microwave (crucial for getting those pesky baked potatoes started) would not work at all, despite the compulsive furkling of every EACC male who passed through the kitchen door and the electric oven developed a handicap of +50. in the power department. However, with some canny juggling of dishes and a fractionally delayed service time, a truly delicious selection of main courses, salads, sides and desserts was provided. The whisky and ham mac'n'cheese was particularly notable - genius idea to add scotland's favourite drink to the popular pasta dish and there would have been haggis on the side had the microwave been working. Next year, maybe. Thanks to everyone who contributed - we couldn't do it without you.
The roomy hall was the perfect size for the forty eight attendees (two up on 2022) and looked magnificent decorated, as ever, with a selection of club regalia and bunting. Warmed nicely by the infra-red heaters it combined cosiness with enough space to table hop comfortably, and for there to be no impediments to visiting Jamie and Phill’s well stocked and cheerfully managed bar. With the delicious food and a steady stream of drinks reaching the important parts, the party atmosphere ensured a very jolly evening.
Following dinner we were treated to a viewing of the film “Classic Sailing on the Broads”. Made by Discus Documentaries, and subsequently bought and broadcast by Anglia TV, it was vintage footage of the 3RR and what, after some discussion by an ad-hoc brains trust, was the 1989 YNR. The Skipper was most amused to see a picture of her now grown-up son Adam as a babe-in-arms in the footage. Thanks to John Thornicroft for syncing up the sound from the imperfect MP4 file we found. It was a very enjoyable trip down memory lane and there were a few familiar faces looking considerably younger!
So all in all a very successful start to the EACC season, let’s hope this season brings us fair winds and lots of sunshine. See you on the water!
