LAYING UP SUPPER 2023
Saturday 11th November
This is the Laying Up Supper, traditionally held at the end of the season after all the boats have been lifted out and are tucked up in their winter quarters of barn, boatshed or bivvy. It is often a night of howling winds and a bitter chill and we've shivered in our best clothes on many occasions, but this year it was just a bit murky. We were, however, happy with just murky because we'd had enough of rain, rain and more rain. The storms of the past months - Agnes, Babet and Ciaran - had complicated the lifting-out plans of some and made many others just a little more nerve-wracking than usual. RCC Mischief had an unexpected road trip after finding herself marooned the wrong side of Potter bridge and RCC SunGlory2 had a scant one centimetre clearance under Wroxham bridge, but others didn't get through at all. The subsequent Storm Debi and a brief period of high pressure seems to have cleared some of the water from the rivers, but the fields remain flooded and the dykes over topped. 2023 will certainly be remembered for its weather.
It's six years since we first went back to The Lion at Thurne for the Laying Up Supper and it has become EACC's venue of choice due to the winning combination of central location, a good sized space for us all to gather and an excellent choice of food and drink. This year's event ticked all of these boxes once again and 46 EACCers met, mingled and mardled over an enjoyable evening. There were some new LUS faces (RCC Hiawatha), a lot of old ones (you know who you are!) who I should perhaps more tactfully refer to as 'regulars' and, happily, a couple who we haven't seen here for a couple of years (RCC Sabrina 2).
The Skipper provided an illustrated overview of the year and then the annual prize giving, the results of which are listed below.
The Ribs of Beef trophy - first presented here six years ago - raised the usual laugh and Liz (RCC Bewitched) was visibly delighted to be awarded it in recognition of her three years as Skipper.
