Welcome Back TMOR

After a three year gap I'm pleased to say that TMOR is back. Having attended TMOR since the mid 1980s I am very happy to say that even with the Covid gap I still think it is the friendliest and most happy of the Broadland Regattas, especially when one realises it is set on the river side of the river flood bank. This is down to the enthusiasm of the committee and members of one of the smaller Yacht clubs on the Broads....EACC!

4-5 days  before the Regatta starts the committee (this year led by Liz Chettleburgh) and many volunteers of the club prepare the site ready for the arrival of the Marquee. Over the following couple of days many extra volunteers arrive to help with the building and stocking of the bar and kitchen and the setting up of the Starters box on the other side of the river.  Despite the numerous almost biblical downpours, in fact I was almost expecting Noah to to turn up and enter the Ark for the Cock of the Broads, all was ready for the bar to be open, on this year, Thursday lunchtime. The afternoon was spent with various games  and sports involving many adults but mostly children, after all this is very much a family orientated club and regatta. A very joyous afternoon. Not only should those volunteers be thanked for getting everything ready, a huge amount of praise should be given to Ruth Thompsons catering team who supplied all with breakfasts, lunches, Teas and evening meals, A brilliant effort.

This year the racing began on Friday, a sunny day day with a fresh chilly NE. Indeed the afternoon race whilst sailed in glorious sunshine presented the participants with some  problems as several powerful gusts came through. Unfortunately  Friday was the last sunny day and the rest of the weekend was sailed in ever glowering skies. Luckily the promised down pours didn't really appear on the Sunday for the Cock of the Broads.

Despite the gloomy weather at the tail end of the regatta, as usual TMOR was a great success. Many thanks to Liz and brilliant set of helpers.

My most recent Thurne Mouth Open Regatta was amazing!

Considering that it was one of the first times I had sailed and the first time I had raced in the entire of 2022, the regatta was truly enjoyable. The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations on the Thursday started the weekend of sailing and water sports with giant Jenga, splat the rat and blindfolded kayaking/paddleboarding round a mark. This was surprisingly difficult because I got disorientation really quickly, and was relying on Finn and Josh yelling instructions to me; but they seemed to give up when I was heading straight up rather than across the river!  

The racing began on Friday and, with two combined allcomers races and a couple of much longer cruiser races to participate in, the day was packed full of beating to one mark and reaching to the next. I just about made it back from my topper to Pippa for the cruiser race; it was the first time my brother and I had actually raced properly together in Pippa, and it was really windy.  We got a rhythm going eventually, but we were a bit shouty for Grandad so we are not sure he’ll ask us again.  

Overall, though I was unfortunately not there for the other days of sailing, TMOR was phenomenal – especially the Friday night in the tent with the music and dancing.  I can’t wait for next year.

Thurne Mouth Open Regatta Returns

Thurne Mouth Open Regatta returned to the Broads sailing scene after a three year wait due to the Covid 19 pandemic. It was especially joyous that EACC arranged TMOR over the special bank holiday “weekend” of Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 

TMOR 2022 followed its unique and unforgettable format, with three days of racing, starting and finishing at Thurne Mouth, a large marquee on the adjacent flood bank, with on-site catering and bar, dancing to live rock ‘n roll bands on two evenings and most competitors encamped on the river banks along both sides of the river between Thurne Mouth and Thurne Dyke.   

Fun events to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee took place on the afternoon of 2nd June, and racing started the following day in a medium breeze that grew in strength as the day wore on.  The YBODs were first away and James Dugdale prevailed. In the combined all-comers Sam Woodcock on the BOD Mallard led the field. River Cruisers were the most numerous fleet, with 31 entries in 6 starts. However as the wind strengthened, some crews remained ashore and there were some retirements, the number of finish river cruisers fell from 24 to 19 between the first and second cruiser races.  John Holmes in Sabrina II won the first race and Matthew Frary won the second in Sabrina V, although the second race would have been won by Sally Dugdale in RC Jessie May if her handicap wasn’t Provisional. The crew’s race was won by Andy Halihan in a Star from David Thompson in RC Dove.

On Sunday, the wind continued to freshen, and whilst the one designs and combined allcomers all turned out for the early  races, the numbers of cruiser finishers continued to drop, 17 in the first race for the Ames Cup and 12 in the second. Catspaw came first in both, with May, Breeze, Alchemy, Sabrina 2, Jessie May, Pickle and Pippinjack in the top 6 places of one or more race.

On Sunday, after each of the 35 entries had submitted their preferred starting times for the prestigious Cock of the Broads trophy, the weather became warmer and less blustery, so the “Cock” became a more pleasant sail.  The event was won by Tim Frary’s India, and Catspaw (Brian Wilkins) came second and Breeze (Matt Ellis) was third.
