RIVER CRUISER CLASS OPEN
Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June
A perfect weekend with lovely sunshine and a good breeze both days for the East Anglian Cruising Club who hosted their annual River Cruiser Class Open regatta on 22/23 June. This meant that all boats went out fully rigged to take advantage of the conditions.
Officer of the Day, Tom Moore, gave the briefing with the first race on Saturday afternoon being a Pursuit Race. 14 boats set off in 10 different starts, with handicaps ranging from -17% to +3%! There were two “new” boats this year – Hassle, being a recent acquisition by Glynn Howarth (we will certainly miss seeing Beth in full sail) and Corsair, Joe Farrow’s river cruiser, up from the southern rivers. The race followed its normal pattern, with the slower boats being caught by the faster boats and some close manoeuvring taking place at times. It was notable that Martlet (the first starter) stayed ahead of the fleet for nearly two rounds of the course. Well sailed Hilary and Marilyn! The river was generally busy with motor boats and other sailing boats which were mainly very co-operative once they realised a race was in progress – there was the odd exception!
Zingara (helmed by Richie Dugdale) was the winner with Breeze second and Catspaw third. A good job carried out by the OOD, Tom Moore and helpers Roger and Lesley Everett, going quickly through the fleet noting positions. Back at the moorings, all hands were needed to dismantle the tent which had blown top over tail in a gust of wind whilst the second start was taking place! Sadly, a couple of the poles were bent so the tent couldn’t be re-erected. It was lucky that the weather was dry and warm for the evening’s BBQ.
The second race of the weekend, on Sunday morning, was a timed race round the buoys within a two-and-a-half hour slot, boats starting in any order with two boats joining the proceedings, Pickle and Evergreen. Corsair had headed off to Horsey for some R & R. The wind had initially changed to a north-easterly breeze with an easterly sea breeze coming in during the morning. This race was won by Breeze (Colin Chettleburgh), with Sabrina II (John Holmes) second and Mystery (Matt Ford) third, with overall elapsed times ranging from 00:51:15 to 1:11:07.
After a lunch break where competitors discussed the racing and caught up on news, the third race was a traditional “round the cans” race, starting and finishing at Thurne Mouth. Good to see John Aves who assisted Tom at the start and finish of this race. The two safety boats set off from the Club site to the start point, only for one of them to have to return as Dr Tom had forgotten his dogs! A second trip back was also made to collect the forgotten white board. Check lists were discussed! Again, 14 boats started and finished with the first three places being Breeze, Mystery and Catspaw.
Back to the moorings for prize giving with the overall prize for the weekend, the Moth Salver, being won by the Breeze team.
All in all, a very successful and enjoyable weekend, thanks as always to the team of volunteers who worked hard to make sure everyone had a good time.
