AUTUMN REGATTA

The last regatta of our season is traditionally 2 passage type races from the club moorings to somewhere up the river Bure. This year we planned to go to South Walsham broad have a rafted lunch and then back to the moorings. However the wind forecast for Sunday was not too promising throughout the week.
On the Sunday morning I undertook the traditional method of weather forecasting and look out of the window to see what was happening, fully expecting to see trees bending almost horizontal. However very few leaves let alone branches were moving and the biblical downpour also forecast likewise had not arrived. Being cautious I checked various weather apps, and all agreed that by about 11:00 the wind would be in the 20 mph plus with gusts of late 20’s increasing as the day progressed so that by 14:00 the gusts would be 35 mph.
Over to the site and still little wind and no rain. There were few boats and few crews around and it looked as if the fleet would be small. EACC if anything are hardy old souls and by the time of the briefing (program 09:45 but actually 10:15 ish) we had 11 entries, so a good turnout.
The weather apps still showing the wind would be increasing with heavy rain, the format was changed to having the races back to back. Race 1 with the slower boats first start, the course being an upwind start down to South Oby Dyke and back to Coldharbour (just before the worm drowners). Race 2 was fast boats first and an additional leg up the Bure towards the first pump house.
When the start sequence began the wind had still not filled in and with an incoming tide it looked as if it was going to be a long, long slow beat. But as soon as the race started in came the wind. Sandpiper Tinkerbell and Evergreen got good starts and a tacking duel down the Thurne began. In the second start Pippinjack got clear from Sabrina II and Mischief with Alice Rose not far behind. Again. there were tacking duels going downriver. Finally, the fast boats in the third start got away. By this time the wind had increased a bit more and the decision of Breeze to put two reefs in looked a good plan. Wandering Rose decided not to reef putting additional ballast in the gorilla pit instead. A quick coffee by the line and boat crew and before we knew it Sandpiper (Colin Little) and Tinkerbell (Adrian Lincoln) came roaring back upriver followed not to long after by the rest of the fleet. Ten boats completed the race with one retirement with mutterings about welders and goose necks.The winner of the Jubilee Cup with a corrected time of 41:30 was Wandering Rose (Steve Burton), 2nd Sandpiper (Colin Little) just 15 seconds behind on corrected time (41:45) and 3rd Sabrina II (John Holmes) 42.23
Having made such good time it was just possible to get the B mark laid to make the second race a bit longer, and to get the first start away by 12:15. The fleet for the second race was smaller with six boats braving the rising wind, and a few deciding a reef was in order. The second start had three boats all of whom were close to the line at the gun, with the opportunity for us to see tacking duels, made more interesting by a boat wallowing in the middle of the river some 50 yards after the start line raising sails.
With the increase in the wind the additional leg made little difference to the time spent racing and by 14:00 the second race was complete. Again the placings were very close. The winner of the Jo Delf trophy going from last in the morning race was Inseinity (Colin Gibbon) with corrected time of 41:32, and just 20 seconds ahead of Wandering Rose (Steve Burton) 41:52, and third Alice Rose (Joe Farrow) 42:28
Afterwards some of us enjoyed a meal at the Thurne Lion and talk about the day’s racing. I do not claim the above title, it was said to me by one of the club officers who had probably has a little bit too much lamb with his red wine.
