A brilliant turn out of forty nine attended the 2024 laying up supper at the Lion in Thurne, a venue that has done us proud for the last few years, is very good value and always well prepared for our invasion. The relationship we have with Ricky, Matthew and the staff is really good and one that we really cherish. Those of us who remember the Lion when it was under the previous management are particularly grateful.

The room, as ever, was decorated beautifully with nautical bunting, flags and the new EACC  feather flags which towered majestically over the proceedings.  Table arrangements were a little different this year, with separate tables of around ten spread around the room as opposed to the two long tables we have had before, but it worked really well, especially when Jamie was doing his review of the year and could wander much more freely, showing off his remarkably sharp haircut, his winning smile and his game-show host persona.

The food was good if not spectacular, and the cheeseboard for those without a sweet tooth was seriously good and very generous: on our table one serving polished off the evening very nicely for eight of us!

The club regatta trophies were all duly distributed, John Holmes winning the coveted Bradnock trophy (the algorithm for working out the points still continues to baffle some of the finest minds in the club, but luckily we have Paul Stevens, whose knowledge of the arcane is all encompassing, and who very kindly assisted the (second) mate in her mathematical endeavours) and Jimmy Wells the crews trophy. The various OOD’s were also thanked for their invaluable contributions with the gifting of the fabulous OOD soaps. We’re not saying the OOD’s need a wash, but when Cally and I were in India in March we stumbled across a perfumery in Delhi that were selling a brand of soap called OOD. Well, it had to be done and we brought back a job lot, so to all of you potential OOD’s for next season there’s a motivation for you (as if the Bradnock average points score isn’t enough) to take on this vital role.

There was a raffle of various prizes that had been held over from TMOR, and general thanks via the skipper to the amazing team that are constructing the absolutely fabulous club house on the moorings – I saw it for the first time earlier that day as I was bringing SG2 down for her lift out and it really does look perfect – the highest praise came from an architect who said:  ‘it looks like it’s been there forever’. Exactly what Tom and the build team were hoping for. It’s going to add so much to the site and to the events we run there.

But as far as I was concerned, the highlight of the evening was the awarding of the coveted yet strangely dreaded ‘Ribs of Beef’ trophy – awarded by the previous holder to the person, persons or boat who (which?) has had the most ‘oops-a-daisy’ moments over the season. Having avoided it for several years, it was only right that it should, this year,  be awarded to Sun Glory II for not only (very nearly) sinking but losing the main sheet main block shackle (how did that happen?)  AND having the water intake impeller shatter into a thousand pieces ALL of which happened during the Southern Rivers Cruise. The glorious trophy will adorn Staithcote beautifully, thanks Liz.

So, another season passes by.  We’ve said goodbye to a few old friends and welcomed a few new ones into our happy band of brothers and sisters. We got through a challenging TMOR (thanks Claire), ran all our events, made new friends, sailed brilliantly, watched the best British performance in an America’s cup for sixty years and so far, unlike this time last year,  the water levels are behaving themselves.

So thanks to Jamie for being a great skipper, thanks to Tom and David (and everyone else who have helped) for their amazing work on the clubhouse, thanks to all the fragrant OOD’s, thanks to all the members for being part of it all, thanks to everyone who’s been a part of our great club, and thanks to Julia Neate who took on the bulk of the heavy lifting of organising the Laying Up Supper itself.

Here’s to EACC!
