Why is it that our, so called, Summer Regatta so often occurs in far from summer conditions? The weather so far this season would lead us to expect that this year would be no different. The best to be said is that it was not as bad as last year when the forecast caused the event to be abandoned altogether.

So, we looked at the forecast and, to be honest, but for the fact that Jane and I had agreed to be Race officers on Saturday, I think Pippinjack’s covers would have stayed on at her moorings in Hunter’s Yard. However, we decided to make our way down to the club site directly after lunch on Friday to do the site preparation, as we had been led to believe by the Met Office that there would be heavy rain commencing at 14:30 and continuing for the rest of the day, most of Saturday and much of Sunday too. Added to which, the winds were expected to be gusty and temperatures those more often experienced in January. We reached the moorings about 13:30, shooed the multitude of geese away and just managed to get the gazebo up when the rain started. Fifteen minutes later a message was received from Sun Glory II who had decided they didn’t want to get soaked bringing their boat down to Thurne from Wroxham, as planned for that evening, so would be coming by car in the morning. They were prepared for the possibility that there may not be any entries, not just because of the weather, but the fact that a record attendance Southern Rivers Cruise had finished for many just a few days earlier.

We battened down the hatches, read a bit, cooked supper on board and went to bed early thinking we were the only members mad enough to be sleeping onboard at the moorings when we could be at home in the warm and dry, as was the 2nd Mate, who kept rubbing in the fact.

The Met Office proved to be absolutely correct and the heavy rain and gusty winds persisting all night. It seemed to be just stopping by the time we poked our head out at about eight and were surprised to see Sabrina II’s mother ship Kay-Em moored in her usual spot in the bushes upstream of the moorings, and even more surprised to learn that he had arrived at four thirty the previous afternoon but the rain was too heavy for us to notice, or for him to make it known, he was there.

The regatta support team arrived at about 8.30 am and a short “A, B & C” course was laid in time for the briefing and the earliest start time of 11am.

For those not aware, the Saturday race for the Summer Regatta is a Thurne Roundabout in which you can choose when to start after 11:00 so long as your timed passage is completed by the cut off time of 16:00. The buoys have to be rounded in the prescribed direction but can be taken in any order. A boat may compete as many times as wished so long as there is a different helm each time. A helm can compete as often as they like so long each attempt is made in a different boat. It is a great event for those not used to helming in a race as the potential stress of conventional starts and sailing in close proximity to lots of other boats is removed. Possibly due to varying wind and tide conditions over the 5 hours, the race often yields some unexpected results, this year being no exception. As usual this was a Charity Race, this year in aid of the club’s nominated charity NANSA, with a suggested minimum donation of £2 per race/helm. Unfortunately the low turnout this year may only result in a total sum of just £22. If you helmed please don’t forget to pay. EACC Charity Account. Sort Code: 20-17-20. Account Number: 40193305.

Saturday’s conditions proved to be remarkably benign, despite the lack of sunshine, with steady westerly wind and only the occasional light shower, the 4 boats that came to the line yielded 11 entries. Steve Burton in Alice Rose took the Cooke Cup with his run of just 27 minutes on corrected time with Di Seeney in Mischief, runner-up just half a minute slower.

Of those left on the moorings at the end of the afternoon, nobody fancied the planned BBQ, so a shortish session in the Lion and comfort food cooked on board was followed by “lets see how many we can get on Mischief” during which the best part of a litre of Captain Morgan’s ‘evaporated’.

Thanks to all who helped in support on Saturday, especially Cally Smith, Jo Edey, John Aves and Dave Read. Additionally Cally did some sterling work sorting the flags and Jo wrote some appropriate poems which may be added here if he sends them to me.

Sunday’s racing was handed over into Mischief crew’s capable hands.

Hopefully a short account of that will follow in due course.
