RIGGING OUT SUPPER
Saturday, 25th April 2026
45 joined us for the 2026 season launch Rigging Out Supper, held this year at our good friends Horning Sailing Club's clubhouse. We have enjoyed using Ranworth village hall for the last few years, but it's always good to ring the changes and the big advantage at Horning is their very well equipped kitchen, which made the catering a whole lot easier. The hall is lovely and bright, with a marvellous view and a number of members took full advantage of the ability to moor right outside.
Once again this year the responsibility of organising was down to Cally, and she made great efforts to get members to supply some delicious dishes with a good spread of styles. We enjoyed the choice of a pork and apple casserole, a chicken tray bake, a beef chilli and a vegetarian Makahani, with accompanying dhal, plus mac'n'cheese and the usual salads and delicious desserts.
Given the good facilities in the HSC kitchen, Cally had decided do her cooking there and I was just finishing packing all the ingredients and kit ready to head off, but when I came back into the house I found Cally flat on her back groaning in agony. 'I've twisted my back!' she gasped through gritted teeth, 'You'll have to take everything and let people in...ow ow, ow!' So, our main striker injured in the warm-up and, as far as I could see, no substitute ready to pull on the number 9 shirt, thus I reflected as I drove the short distance to Horning, picking up the keys to the clubhouse on the way. On arrival I was very happy to see Julia Bellamy and Dr. Tom moored up along with Paul and Jane. I began to see a glimmer of hope.
'Julia, lovely to see you' I said 'I wonder whether you might be up for a little job?' I explained what had happened and suddenly Dr. Tom was dispensing medical advice over the phone to Cally, and Julia was unpacking the ingredients for Cally's dish. In the meantime Cally had also spoken to Roger and Lesley and between them and Julia all of Cally's planned dishes were prepared with great skill and aplomb. After Tom's advice I was able to return to base and retrieve the injured striker, who had responded to treatment pretty well.
And so the evening started. Jamie's bar was busy, food was eaten, and very delicious it was too, the kitchen ran like clockwork and hummed with activity, and with Cally back to 90% fitness and starting on the washing up everything was running beautifully.
Sadly there was another unplanned substitution. Phill had prepared a quiz-tastic finale for the evening covering the 9 decades of EACC, which he was due to deliver resplendent in his best sequinned jacket, but car trouble had left him stranded in Potter awaiting the arrival of the AA. We do understand that the AA have to prioritise emergencies, but sadly our emergency was not their emergency. The skipper stepped into the breach, of course he did, and the quiz was duly delivered and enjoyed by all. The sequinned jacket, the brylcreemed hair and the deadpan jokes will have to wait for another day.
So the season was launched, and I write this as we await the arrival of the spring cruise in Wroxham - the weather is glorious, the wind is blowing gently, the sails are up and the season beckons!
See you on the water!
